We have some great news to announce. Lead has officially purchased the land next door to our current building. This land will be the future home of a new gym with other details to come. We don’t have a timeline on this project yet but have begun the planning phases. Big things to come. We hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving.

The latest DHEC report shows Greenville County numbers continue to climb into the high with significant increase range. In accordance with our Lead Academy reopening plan, starting on Monday November 2, 2020 we will phase to plan 0 which is fully virtual for students in grades 5-8. Students in grades K-4 will remain on the current plan. We want to thank students, staff, families and caregivers who will need to exercise a great deal of flexibility. We regret the hardships this will cause for some of our families. This is uncharted territory that we all are navigating together and we understand this action causes disruption. Great care and research went into this decision; however, we are making this decision not because we think we will stop a pandemic. We are simply trying to do our part in what we believe is the right step to take for the health and safety of our families, employees, and the community at large, especially to protect our students and employees who are at greater risk. We will continue monitoring the situation weekly and proceed on a week-by-week basis. Dear Lead Families, I want to personally thank you for your support during these challenging times. Your patience and understanding has really been a breath of fresh air coming in as the new principal. I’ve never seen this kind of support in my time as an administrator and Lead Academy is truly something special. I want you to know that Lead Academy values the safety of our faculty, staff, students, and families. We believe that most students learn best in the building and we place high value on teaching your children in creating safe in-person instruction for all grades. The latest Greenville County spread rate numbers are a cause for concern in accordance with our Lead Academy reopening plan. The numbers shared in the last report are categorized as high with significant increase. This week, Lead will remain on the current attendance plan for all grades. Should the county level data provided by DHEC remain at the current level or increase, we will begin phasing grades 5-8 to virtual instruction starting 11/2. A decision will be announced the morning of 10/30. If the county level data provided by DHEC remains at current levels or increases for a second week (data released on 11/5), we will continue phasing out remaining grades until levels fall significantly. Updates will be made weekly following the release of county level data provided by DHEC on Thursdays. You can find our reopening plan here https://core-docs.s3.amazonaws.com/documents/asset/uploaded_file/927020/9-22_Modified_Reopening_Plan_and_Timeline___1_.pdf For this week, we have enhanced our safety protocols to add an extra layer of precaution. We hope the county spread rate will decrease significantly and allow us to keep everyone in the building. As always, if questions arise, feel free to contact me at cubaker@myleadacademy.com Once again, thank you for your continued support.

Dear Parents/Guardians: This past Sunday, 10/11/2020, we were informed two sibling students were exposed to a family member that tested positive for COVID 19 in grades 1 and 5. Through contact tracing, we confirmed that 3 teachers within those grades were in close contact with the exposed students. It has been confirmed that the 5th grade student tested positive for COVID-19. Out of an abundance of caution, 1st grade students are included in the 14-day quarantine. Lead Academy took proactive measures and excluded the exposed faculty and both grades levels of students before an official confirmation of a positive case was provided. Lead Academy not only has the task of providing our students with a high quality education, but have also been deemed the task of keeping our students, faculty, staff, and families safe during a pandemic. During this process we have become more knowledgeable in improving our systems and procedures in the building, and also how to communicate to families in a timely manner. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we strive to keep all stakeholders safe. Students in grades 1 and 5, and siblings of these students, will return to in-person instruction on Monday October 26, 2020, which will complete a 14-day quarantine window. We continue to encourage all parents to temperature scan and monitor students closely for any sign of potential illness. Students should remain at home if they are exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19 including fever, new or persistent cough, headache, loss of taste or smell, fatigue and/or stomach issues (diarrhea). If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at cubaker@myleadacademy.com or Carlie Feno at cafeno@myleadacademy.com Thank you

Dear parents, This week you will be receiving a progress report for your child. Our progress reports will look different than years past. Instead of receiving a letter or numerical grade, our vision is to give parents a more holistic view at student progress towards mastery of content. Included in each report, each student should have attached specific and meaningful comments from each teacher for both ELA and Math. These comments and reports should give you a better idea of where students are currently and a plan to help progress students towards mastery. Please let me know if you have any questions. At the end of the first nine weeks, you will receive a jump rope report and log in. We are excited to welcome 6th – 8th grade in-person students the week of 10/5. On each students first day, parents are welcome to park and walk their students into the front lobby and take a first day of school picture in front of the Lead Falcon Mural. Everyone must be temperature checked and wear a mask while maintaining social distance from other families. We will not be allowing any parents to go all the way to the classroom to keep germs away. Also, please make sure you bring a full water bottle and a mask to wear at times during the day when it is necessary. You may begin arriving at 7:10 and classes will begin at 7:50. We will dismiss at 2:15 each day.

It's Tuesday! That means another Table Talk. This week we continue discussing another founding principle at Lead - Work Hard. This principle calls on us to put in the work in order to see the results we hope for. Working hard doesn’t mean doing things the most difficult way. It does mean that, as you confront challenges, you continue to push toward the goal. If we are to be leaders of our own learning, working hard is one key that will help us unlock our greatest potential. https://www.myleadacademy.com/o/lead-academy/page/crew-table-talks

¡Buenas noticias!

Great News! We have received a USDA waiver to be able to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students regardless of lunch status until 12/31/20. This means everyone can eat free any time they want until then, no lunch money required. This goes into effect immediately. Also, we shared a to go meal survey for virtual or at home students a while back and only received a couple of responses so we are re-sharing that now. If we have enough interest, we will communicate details on a meal pickup plan in a week or two. Please fill out the survey if you are interested by Wednesday 9/23. https://forms.gle/83NnJh1y6NQyDCTu6

Unfortunately, Greenville County was labeled with a COVID spread rate of high today for the second week in a row. Due to this, we are putting our plans to bring 4-8 grades on campus next week on pause. K/1 will continue to attend on Plan 4 and 2/3 will continue to attend on Plan 2 next week just like they did this week. Grades 4-8 will remain 100% virtual until further notice when spread rates decline. We will communicate the next steps of our plan next Monday after those ratings come out. This decision is in accordance with our approved reopening plan and in the best interest of the health and safety of our students and staff. We are excited to welcome 2nd and 3rd grade in-person students the week of 9/14. On Monday and Thursday, parents are welcome to park and walk their students into the front lobby and take a first day of school picture in front of the Lead Falcon Mural.

Some of our kindergarten kids participated in their first field work of the year. Experts from Conestee Park came to teach us about how to care for trees so that we could help mulch some school trees. They also had the chance to get to know one another in crew activities and play some math games. What a great start to the school year! Shout out to Ms. Schneider and our friends at Conestee Park for organizing!

Gears Update: GEARS is looking forward to returning to some type of "normalcy" and serving children on-site at Lead Academy. However, due to the current numbers of COVID-19 cases in Greenville county, GEARS is currently offering virtual academic assistance to 1st -6th grade students. When Lead Academy opens the facility for face-to-face instruction, we will also offer a hybrid model for after school services. If Lead opens two days per week face-to-face and three days virtual, GEARS will be available for face-to-face after school from 2:15 pm - 6:00 pm for the days your child is on campus, and will offer virtual academic assistance on the days they attend school virtually.

We'd like to share a message we just received from Lifetouch, our yearbook provider: Dear Families, Yearbooks are a tradition for schools throughout the US and Canada. At Lifetouch, we are humbled to be a part of providing that tradition. We know how important yearbooks are - especially in times like these. We want to take a moment to acknowledge this year’s delayed yearbook delivery is not what you, as our customers expect, nor deserve, from Lifetouch. We want you to be aware that our primary yearbook production facilities are located in some of the states that are being hardest hit by the pandemic. We have prioritized the safety of our employees; and we are following all state and local health guidelines to create a safe working environment. Social distancing requirements mean that there are fewer people available to work at any given time. These changes have impacted our production schedule in meaningful ways. We realize this has created a lot of frustration since we are currently unable to provide an estimated delivery time frame for your school’s yearbook. Please know our teams are doing everything possible to get your yearbook to you. Shipping is monitored daily. As soon as your yearbook ships, your school will receive tracking information so they can arrange to distribute the yearbooks to the students and families in a manner that is best suited for everyone’s safety. As we navigate COVID-19, our intent is to provide you with a yearbook that your student will treasure for a lifetime. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this unprecedented time together. Sincerely, Lifetouch

What is Pandemic EBT (P-EBT)? P-EBT is a one-time benefit to help supplement family food costs resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and prolonged school closures. For households not participating in SNAP whose child(ren) were enrolled in a free or reduced-price (FRP) meals program or attending a CEP school as of March 13, 2020, a P-EBT card will be mailed to the address on file with your child’s school district between July 20th and July 24th. No further action is required on your part to receive your P-EBT benefit. Who is eligible for P-EBT? Children in Head Start and 4K-12 students enrolled in a free or reduced-price school meals program under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) or are enrolled in a school that has opted to participate in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) are eligible to receive P-EBT. Lead Academy IS NOT a CEP school. Please allow the state to fully issue all P-EBT benefits by August 15th, before inquiring about your benefit status. If you have not received your benefit by August 15th, please email PEBTBenefits@dss.sc.gov.

Just a reminder, we will be releasing our plan along with a video and accompanying parent registration document. We will also be releasing a full Q and A video early next week as well as a video focused specifically on K-2 early next week around what virtual and hybrid would look like for primary students. We know a primary concern during these scenarios is what does it look like for a primary student to learn to read in a virtual and hybrid scenario. That video will address that aspect.

Parents and caregivers, we know back to school sales are in full swing and some of you may like to get a jump on purchasing supplies. With there still being so many unknowns about next year we do not yet have a complete list of school supplies. We don't want to ask you to buy something, and then it not be necessary should the schooling situation change. Here are the things we know we will need at each grade band, regardless of what school looks like next year. You are welcome to purchase these now or wait until a full list is released in early August. Everyone: Highlighter, glue stick, scissors, markers, headphones, expo markers, pencils and pencil sharpener, Buy the sharpener that works best for your children - electric or manual K-2: crayons, K-1 needs 3 primary composition books, 2nd grade needs three wide ruled composition books 3-8: post it notes, colored pencils, lined paper, one pack of pens that are not black, index cards, two composition books

Just a quick COVID update. We are working hard this week to finalize our draft reopening plans including start date and potential scenarios depending on spread rate. We will be releasing those plans this Friday via our normal communication channels. We will also be filming and releasing a Q and A video next week to address the many questions we have already gotten and will get. I can't thank you enough for your trust and patience through this difficult summer planning process.

Reopening planning has been challenging and crazy enough but the last 24 hours may have been the craziest. Mr. Baker (Principal) and Mr. W (Executive Director) sat down today to have a "Covid Conversation" to talk through the struggle that is reopening planning and provide a window into the things they are wrestling with. We always seek to be transparent and honest so this video is a look into conversations we are having all day, every day. We also plan to do a video in Spanish next week providing more info and answering question. I know a lot of questions resulted from today's press conference from our Governor. We are currently working to figure out what has or hasn't changed from today's statement. We have worked hard to create a solid plan for reopening and still plan to release those in the next week or two. Mr. Baker and I will be releasing a video by the end of the week answering some of your questions and expanding on our upcoming plans.

Happy Friday everyone! Early next week we will release a video outlining our progress around planning for reopening and the different scenarios that exist. It still will be closer to the end of July before we can commit to exactly which plan will be in place on August 17 but we wanted to talk through some of the different options out there. There will also be a very important survey accompanying the video that we need 100% of families to fill out so we can plan for who will or will not show up to in person instruction if we are allowed to have it. I will explain more in the video. Have a great and safe weekend!

Just a reminder, we are diligently working on fall reopening plans. We plan to announce detailed information the week of July 20th. In the meantime, please continue to do your part to swing our COVID numbers to a more positive direction. To see how SCDHEC is determining spread rate for each county, view this doc: https://www.dhec.sc.gov/sites/default/files/media/document/COVID19-Recent-Disease-Activity-Department-of-Education_7.6.2020.pdf?fbclid=IwAR2meKb-3YgVclbGgLbhIkq1629utzEIfIeywulZDnHhUk43fq2b3Tx3YhA Based on current numbers, if we can't reduce numbers soon, it will be very difficult for schools across the state to bring back students in person anytime soon. Please do your part to reduce and end COVID, no matter how inconvenient it may be so we can get back on campus. We are Crew, Not Passengers!

I wanted to let you know that we have established a School Reopening Team that is actively working on plans for the fall and we will be sending a parent survey early next week out to families for input and ideas. We will start updating you on planning progress weekly beginning next week. Our goal is to create a plan that emphasizes both student learning and safety for all stakeholders. 8th Grade Families, I wanted to provide an update on the June 22nd scheduled 8th Grade promotion ceremony. After consultation with our board and seeking both legal advice and recommendations by health officials, we do not at this time feel comfortable holding in person ceremonies at this time. With the infection rate currently on the rise in Greenville County and with many of the hardest hit areas being communities we serve, we feel it is our duty to promote health and safety above all. Everyone has their own opinions about the seriousness of COVID and the need for social distancing or staying home and we respect all of those varying opinions and desires. However, as a school, it is our duty to not expose staff and family members to unnecessary risk or exposure when many are also caring for family members who may be at high risk for serious health complications. While we strongly desire to honor 8th grade students and their families, we also strongly desire to be cautious and considerate of the current health situation. With that said, in person ceremonies for June 22nd are cancelled. We will continue to discuss ways to honor 8th grade students and families and will release more information at a later time. We know this decision may please some and disappoint others but it is a very complicated and difficult situation and decision and feel we are doing what is best for everyone involved. Mrs. Ide was gracious enough to put together a slideshow video of pictures past and present of 8th graders. I will be uploading that to Youtube for you to view later this week. Thank you. Gracias.

One of our big goals over the next year is to do a better of putting out information about how we do things, why we do them that way, what is important to Lead Academy and also answering your questions about topics that you are interested in learning more about. We want to build stronger connections with our school community and make sure we are all on the same page with how to create a bright future for all Lead Academy students. It is a bit challenging, however, because everyone prefers consuming information in different ways. Please complete this survey below to indicate how you prefer to receive and consume information. This will greatly help us choose wisely how we distribute important information. When completing the survey, think about information that falls outside of alerts and messages from school. We will continue to send alerts and important announcement via every avenue possible. This survey is more focusing on information that goes deeper into particular topics. EX: Why do we do crew everyday and what kinds of things happen in crew? Thank you! https://forms.gle/XX6JLoQHkk8JKy7M6

Just a reminder, work for May can be picked up tomorrow at the school from 10-4. We will also upload copies to our website and share that link tomorrow if you want to print at home. 4th-8th grade teachers will continue pushing out assignments via chromebook for those that prefer that method. From 11-2, we will be available to handle any Chromebook issues or allow you to retrieve personal items or medication from the building you may have left behind. Outside of 11-2, the pickup tables will be unmanned. We will also have boxes out for you to drop off any completed work you have completed on paper. Also, if you have any novels you are finished with, please turn those in as well. Finally, use this link to view some important athletics updates: https://bit.ly/3flZxEq If you have any questions, please let us know.

¡Gracias!

May School Closure Update We hope everyone is doing well and making the best of this situation. We wanted to send a few details regarding May Distance Learning. The plan for May will be very similar to April. 4th-8th grade will push things out electronically and we will also provide paper copies for those interested as well as uploading those to our website if you want to print yourself. K-3 will provide paper assignments. Paper copies of assignments may be picked up at the school from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Tuesday, May 5th. At this time, we will also have boxes out for students to turn in any completed paperwork. Please make sure your name is on every sheet of paper in case papers become separated. Also, from 11:00-2:00, we will be available to fix any chromebook issues students may be having. Any student in grades 4-8 having any issues with their chromebook or charger is encouraged to stop by during that time. From 10:00-1:00, Nurse Todd will be available for any parent needing to pick up medication from the health room. We realize these times and situations are not ideal. However, we have been very impressed and grateful for the perseverance, patience, and grace shown by students, families and staff. I truly believe we will come out better, stronger, and smarter after all of this. We will send another update this weekend with additional updates and information. Thanks!

For now continuing working as normal and we will provide more detailed updates along with information about work pick up and dropping off of completed work in an update next week. If you need anything or have questions before our update next week, please let us know. We are Crew, Not Passengers. Whew, that was a long day of preparing materials for students. we are on schedule to have all materials ready for students to pick up at the scheduled pickup times. Those times can be found here: https://www.myleadacademy.com/o/lead-academy/news . When you arrive at school, please park on the left side of the carline or in the parking lot and enter the front of the building. Materials will be in the media center. We went a bit heavier with paper and pencil assignments this closure so we can put more plans in place for more digital instruction should this closure last longer than two weeks. We figured that more paper and pencil may be easier for students and parents to keep track of than using more digital. We will begin calling at 2:00 anyone who hasn't come by yet just to make sure they are coming before 6:00. If you plan to pick up at one of the off campus pickups, please call 864-916-1459 and let us know. Families, due to some widespread issues with Powerschool not sending the correct and current rosters over to Jumprope, we are going to delay the printing and sending home of progress reports until Next Tuesday, 2/25 rather than Thursday, 2/ 20. This will give us a few days to sort out the issue with the Powerschool folks and allow teachers a few additional days to update data as they are in a holding pattern right now. Thank you for understanding.

We are so excited that Celebrations of Learning are here! The goal of our COLs is for students to present to guests the journey of their learning over the last few months. Each student has done a deep dive into a single theme across their core classes. This is an opportunity for them to display their learning growth and how that learning showed up both in their academic work across subjects and also in the work habits. Another goal of our COLs is for our students to become more and more comfortable with speaking to others in a professional manner. This is a hallmark event for us as a school. We ask that you make every effort to attend and allow your child to stay the entire time. We also ask that you spend time visiting other grades that are presenting and listening to students other than your own. In doing this, you will hopefully get to know the school better, while also supporting the learning of our larger student body. See you soon!

Today was our first EAFK ceremony of the school year. We recognized students for the virtues of compassion and perseverance. It was also the launch of a new initiative we started called EPIC Leaders. Each quarter, students are nominated by their teachers to be EPIC Leaders. An EPIC Leader is a student who not only embodies empathy, perseverance, integrity and curiosity at all times but pushes others to grow in those character traits. They are the highest of leaders at Lead. Once appointed an EPIC Leader, the student has a responsibility to continue to be a leader and ambassador for Lead Academy. EPIC Leaders receive the honor and respect but also a special reward trip and a bag of goodies. EPIC Leaders are a select group all should strive to join in the future! Congratulations EPIC Leaders!

Parents, your child’s fundraiser order will be delivered to Lead Academy this Wednesday, October 16th and must be picked up between 2:00 - 6:00 PM. Students with orders of 10 items or less may pick up and take their orders with them. Orders of 10 items or more must be picked up by a parent or guardian. There are frozen products and we want to make sure they get all picked up since we do not have any refrigeration space available to store orders not picked up. You are welcome to send a neighbor, friend, older child or family members to come pick up your items if you are not able to make it. All they need is the student name and we’ll take care of the rest. Thank you so very much for your support! We had a wonderful fundraiser and could not have done it without you!

Two quick Wednesday reminders: 1. Please check your student's backpack daily for paperwork sent home from school that needs to be filled out. This will greatly help us to make sure all students have the required paperwork on file. 2. Whenever a student is absent or late, please use the "Absence Form" link in the new Lead app to submitted a parent excuse or send the doctor's note in to the front office. Using the form in the app sends the note directly to the front office and decreases the chances it is lost or ends up in the wrong place. Have a great rest of the week!

Just a reminder that students who arrive to school after 7:50 are tardy. Keep in mind that any student with 10 or more tardies is considered truant and may be required to create an attendance intervention plan. Every day students are tardy they are missing valuable crew time and instruction. Thank you to those that get here consistently on time. We realize traffic happens and life happens but please try your hardest to get to school on time each day. If we can assist in any way, please let us know. #wearecrewnotpassengers

Just a reminder that we use Jumprope Mastery Grading for our grading platform rather than Powerschool. We will send home parent logins for jumprope with progress reports next Thursday, 9/19. At that point, you will be able to login anytime you want to see progress. We wanted to make sure people were aware when logins will be sent home since we've had a few inquiries about it. Have a great day!

Lead Academy is holding a back to school dance on Friday, September 6th. K5-4th Grade dance will be from 3:45-5:00 and 5th-8th will be from 5:30-7:00. Tickets to the dance cost $ and can be sent in to the front office with the student's name on it. K5-4th grade students may stay after school for the dance but 5th-8th graders must leave and return at 5:30. They may not stay for the lower grades dance time.
